Diving Into the Future: Assam’s Rs 22,000 Crore Underwater Marvel

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced a groundbreaking infrastructure project in Assam: India's first—and the world's second—underwater road-cum-rail twin-tube tunnel beneath the Brahmaputra River. Costing an estimated Rs 22,000 crore, the Gohpur-Numaligarh project spans 15.79 km as part of a larger 33.7-km greenfield corridor. By cutting travel time between Gohpur and Numaligarh from six hours to just 30 minutes, this EPC-model initiative will deliver all-weather transit, boost the regional economy, and significantly strengthen defense readiness in Northeast India.
